Igniting Change: Empowering Student Communities for Disaster Risk Reduction

By Shehneela Mazhar:

In a nation where disasters strike with unforgiving force, a visionary project called “Capacity Building of Student Communities” emerged, spearheaded by the dynamic Dr. Aisha Azhar, Fulbrighter, and supported by the Alumni Small Grant (ASG). This transformative initiative aimed to introduce a foundation course on disaster risk reduction into undergraduate degree programs, equipping the youth with invaluable knowledge and skills to effectively combat calamities and safeguard lives.

Creating a Path to Knowledge: The journey began by offering a groundbreaking disaster risk reduction course at the School of Governance and Society, University of Management and Technology (UMT). Eager undergraduate students seized the opportunity to receive comprehensive training in disaster prevention and risk reduction. Through rigorous pretests and post-tests, the project revealed remarkable enhancements in the students’ understanding of disaster management.

On-Site Learning and Inspiration: To breathe life into the subject, the students embarked on an eye-opening study tour to Rescue 1122, where they witnessed first-hand the heroism and dedication of the rescuers. Immersed in multiple life-saving techniques, the students left inspired, driven to make a profound difference in disaster response.

Knowledge Multipliers: The project’s impact didn’t end with the students—it aimed to ignite a lasting flame of change. To achieve this, the initiative focused on training future faculty members from renowned educational institutions in Lahore. An all-encompassing training workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction was orchestrated, attracting senior faculty members from prominent public and private universities. The workshop delved into various facets of disaster risk management, empowering these educators to become knowledge multipliers.

Experts Leading the Way: Esteemed experts adorned the workshop as trainers, including the esteemed Dr. Ahmad Ali Gul (Director of the Center for Disaster Management, UMT), the visionary Ms. Shiaza Khwaja (Member of Avoidable Death Networks), and the illustrious Dr. Sana Khosa (Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, LUMS). The presence of Dr. Rizwan Naseer (Secretary Provincial Emergency Department, Founder of Rescue 1122) added weight to the event, as he shared invaluable insights on Disaster Response: UN-INSARAG and Turkish Earthquake response by Pakistan Rescue Team.

Expanding the Reach: The workshop became a melting pot of ideas, fostering profound discussions on disaster risk management fundamentals, gender mainstreaming, and addressing the challenges posed by climate change and the devastating floods of 2022. Aisha Azhar, the project lead and principal investigator, humbly expressed gratitude to the participants, trainers, and guests from Rescue 1122 & PUAN during the ceremony’s heartfelt closing. The trainees were honored with certificates of participation, while the trainers and speakers received heartfelt souvenirs.

A Vision for the Future: The impact of this groundbreaking endeavor has been undeniable, igniting the spark of change that will transcend time. The passionate project lead envisions even grander horizons—submitting a formal proposal for integrating disaster management as a mandatory subject in undergraduate programs across Pakistan. With the Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Climate Change, National Disaster Management Authority, and Rescue 1122 as key collaborators, this vision aims to mold a generation of skilled individuals prepared to safeguard lives and communities from the ravages of disasters.

Conclusion: “Igniting Change: Empowering Student Communities for Disaster Risk Reduction” stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration, illuminating the path to a safer, more resilient Pakistan. Armed with knowledge and driven by compassion, these young minds are poised to lead the way in safeguarding their communities. This project exemplifies the power of education, cooperation, and determination in building a brighter and more secure future for all. Together, we can forge a nation united in strength, ready to face any challenge nature throws our way.
