From U.S. Exchange to Artistic Excellence: Shahkaar Fankaar Opens with Minaa Haroon’s Kal Exhibition

Islamabad, October 22, 2026: The U.S. Embassy Islamabad, United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), and Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN) inaugurated the first Shahkaar Fankaar Alumni Artist Showcase at a newly established gallery space in the USEFP building in Islamabad.

Launched as part of the Freedom 250 commemorations, the initiative celebrates decades of U.S. educational and cultural exchanges by providing a dedicated platform to recognize the artistic achievements of U.S. government-sponsored exchange alumni.

The inaugural exhibition, titled Kal (Yesterday, Tomorrow), features Lahore-based visual artist Minaa Haroon, a 2024 International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) alumna whose work explores cultural inheritance, memory, and identity through contemporary artistic expression.

From American Cultural Preservation Practices to Artistic Innovation

Minaa Haroon, who serves as Assistant Director (Fine Arts) at the Lahore Arts Council, participated in the IVLP in Cultural Preservation in April 2024, supported by the U.S. Consulate General Lahore.

During her exchange, visits to American museums and galleries introduced her to different approaches to preserving, interpreting, and presenting cultural heritage. These experiences deepened her exploration of inherited objects and their significance across generations.

Her exhibition, Kal, takes its name from the Urdu word that refers to both yesterday and tomorrow, reflecting the relationship between the past, present, and future.

Beginning with jewelry inherited from her mother, Minaa Haroon transforms personal heirlooms into contemporary visual compositions. Her artistic process combines traditional miniature painting techniques with experimentation involving paper, plant fibers, gouache, archival ink, and 24-karat gold leaf.

Through fragmentation, reconstruction, and intricate geometric patterns, she reimagines inherited objects as expressions of memory and cultural continuity.

The exhibition offers a tangible example of how exposure to American cultural institutions and professional practices can inform an exchange alumna’s creative development and artistic work in Pakistan.

Recognizing Alumni Artistic Excellence

Heidi Smith, Director of Public Engagement at the U.S. Embassy Islamabad, attended the opening and highlighted the longstanding contribution of American educational and cultural exchanges to professional development, innovation, and artistic achievement.

She also presented Minaa with a Certificate of Recognition for her artistic excellence and accomplishments as a U.S. exchange alumna.

The opening brought together representatives from the U.S. Department of State, Pakistan’s arts community, exchange alumni, and members of the diplomatic corps.

Among the attendees were Asma Rashid-Khan, Director of Satrang Gallery and program advisor for Shahkaar Fankaar, and Sarah Rajper, curator of the inaugural exhibition.

The exhibition’s curatorial approach highlights how Minaa’s experience in the United States informed her exploration of cultural preservation. Rather than treating inherited objects as static artifacts, her work reinterprets them through contemporary artistic techniques.

Dr. Peter K. Moran, Executive Director of USEFP, also commemorated the opening through a written statement emphasizing how educational and cultural exchanges broaden perspectives and inspire new forms of creative expression.

A highlight of the ceremony was a 3D projection of Minaa’s artwork onto the exterior of the USEFP building, produced by Islamabad-based Hoola Digital Pvt. Ltd. The company previously created projections at the Pakistan Monument and Lahore Fort to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Creating a Platform for U.S. Exchange Alumni Artists

Beyond the inaugural exhibition, Shahkaar Fankaar establishes a dedicated platform for alumni artists to present their work, expand professional visibility, and connect with curators, arts professionals, and institutional networks.

The initiative provides selected artists with individual exhibitions, professional curatorial support, promotional opportunities, and exposure to visitors at USEFP.

Three additional U.S. exchange alumni artists are scheduled to present solo exhibitions in 2027:

  • Rahim Khetran, a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow, photographer, anthropologist, and storyteller.
  • Sidra Khawaja, a Fulbright Scholar, interdisciplinary artist, designer, and researcher who earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
  • Amna Yaseen, a 2025 IVLP alumna specializing in photojournalism and visual storytelling.

Their participation will expand the showcase across different artistic disciplines, highlighting the range of creative expertise developed through U.S. educational and professional exchange programs.

Celebrating American Exchange Excellence Through Freedom 250

As the United States commemorates 250 years of independence, Shahkaar Fankaar highlights the continuing value of American educational and cultural exchanges in supporting professional development, artistic innovation, and collaboration.

The initiative demonstrates how U.S. exchange experiences can extend beyond individual learning opportunities, enabling alumni to apply new knowledge, techniques, and professional perspectives in their respective fields.

Through Shahkaar Fankaar, the U.S. Embassy, USEFP, and PUAN are creating opportunities for exchange alumni to showcase their achievements while introducing audiences to the creative outcomes of American educational and professional exchanges.
