Bookworms to Bridge Builders: Connecting Cultures Through American Authors

Meet Adnan Ahmed Memon, a linguistics whiz from Khairpur, Sindh! This English Works program graduate (class of 2022) isn’t your average bookworm. Adnan recently completed his Alumni Small Grant (ASG) titled “Exploring America Through Literature,” a project that went way beyond dusty old book-shelves. This project wasn’t just about books; it was about fostering understanding and appreciation between cultures. Think of it as a crash course in America, taught by the country’s rockstar writers. Adnan, who’s also a PhD student now, has always loved using literature to bridge cultures. So, this project was a perfect fit.

“Exploring America Through Literature” aimed to bridge the gap between cultures by introducing participants to American literary giants. Through carefully chosen readings and discussions, the project encouraged critical thinking, cultural exchange, and a broader understanding of American ideals. But it wasn’t a one-way street. By exploring excerpts from American literature, participants sparked meaningful conversations that transcended borders, fostering respect and tolerance.

Here’s the gist: Adnan brought together 40 young folks in Khairpur and introduced them to American literary greats. They read, discussed, and basically hung out with these authors (figuratively, of course!). The goal? To spark critical thinking, cultural exchange, and a deeper appreciation for American values.

However, it wasn’t a one-sided love affair. By exploring American lit, participants opened up conversations that crossed borders and fostered respect for each other’s cultures.

So, why literature? Well, Adnan believes that American authors hold the key to understanding the American Dream and the people who chase it. “These writers are some of the best in the world,” he says. “Through their stories, participants got a glimpse into America’s soul – its politics, its democracy, and the everyday lives of its people.”

And guess what? The project was a smash hit! Participants walked away with a new respect for American ideals and the power of words. One participant even said the project helped them ace an overseas scholarship interview! Another, Aisha Shaikh (age 17), shared, “It was a whole new experience that helped me out during my interview.” Abbas Raza (age 16) is now hooked on literature: “I love reading creative stuff now, and I’m gonna keep sharing what I learn with my friends.”

Adnan’s story is proof that the PUAN Alumni Small Grant program is a game-changer. Through Alumni Small Grants like these, PUAN is building bridges of understanding and promoting cross-cultural connections.
