Amidst the ever increasing challenges of urban life, a ray of hope emerged in the form of Sahar Lakho, a Global UGrad 2016 alumna from PUAN Karachi chapter, with a mission to create a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable children. With her Alumni Small Grant (ASG) titled “KDSP x AKU certified teacher training course for inclusive education,” Sahar embarked on a journey that would touch the hearts of countless children and their families, and change the course of their destinies.
Driven by her passion for education, women empowerment, and inclusion, Sahar’s vision was to provide quality inclusive education opportunities for children with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities. Collaborating with Karachi Down Syndrome Program (KDSP) and Aga Khan University (AKU), she designed a specialized 4-month course to empower 44 resource teachers, equipping them to build inclusive classrooms and uplift over 200 children with special needs.
The impact of Sahar’s project was profound and heartwarming. Through theoretical, practical, and hands-on training from top trainers in the field, participants experienced a transformative journey. Uzma Azhar, one of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude, stating, “The course conducted by KDSP Aga Khan was truly life-changing. It opened my eyes to the power of inclusive education and how it can transform lives.”
Hina Urooj, another participant, shared her profound learning experience, saying, “I now realize the immense potential that lies within every child, regardless of their abilities. Through this course, I have gained the confidence to make a real difference in the lives of these special children.”
As the course unfolded, the impact rippled beyond the classrooms. Families of the children felt the positive change in their loved ones’ lives. Parents and siblings witnessed newfound confidence and resilience in the children, knowing they were receiving equal educational opportunities.
Sahar’s collaboration with the U.S. Mission and PUAN provided a supportive foundation, but she also faced challenges due to strict communication and approval policies. Nonetheless, her unwavering determination and dedication shone through, leaving an indelible mark on the education landscape of Karachi.
In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Through Sahar Lakho’s relentless pursuit of inclusive education, barriers were broken, hearts were touched, and lives were transformed. Her impactful and inspiring project stands as a beacon of hope, illuminating a path towards a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
The children of Karachi now have a chance to rise above adversity, armed with the power of education, inclusion, and compassion. Sahar’s journey reminds us that a single individual can ignite change and make a significant difference in the lives of many.
