Dr. Nudrat Ejaz Piracha, Fulbright PhD Scholar and PUAN Member, Launches Pakistan’s First Online Dispute Resolution Platform with Support from the U.S. Mission and PUAN

Pakistan has entered a new era of digital justice with the launch of its first Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) Platform, led by Dr. Nudrat Ejaz Piracha, a Fulbright PhD scholar (2015–2020) and an active member of the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network. Supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network under the PUAN Grants Program theme “Promoting entrepreneurship and strengthening business ties between the United States and Pakistan,” the initiative marks a breakthrough in modernizing the country’s legal and business environment.

The platform-developed in collaboration with the International Centre for Appropriate Dispute Resolution and Prevention (ICADRP)-was unveiled at a high-profile ceremony at the Islamabad Club, attended by senior government representatives, judicial leaders, members of the diplomatic community, civil society, and legal practitioners.

A Digital Solution for Accessible, Affordable Justice

Created over an intensive six-week development window, the ODR platform brings Pakistan closer to global digital justice standards by enabling secure online case filing, virtual mediation and arbitration, AI-assisted negotiation tools, and a streamlined digital case management system. It offers a fast, cost-effective alternative to traditional litigation-particularly benefiting:

  • SMEs and entrepreneurs
  • Women and marginalized groups
  • Overseas Pakistanis
  • Individuals in remote or underserved regions
  • Foreign and local investors seeking predictable dispute resolution

By reducing court burdens and enhancing efficiency, the platform strengthens Pakistan’s economic climate and aligns with international best practices in alternative dispute resolution.

Support from the U.S. Mission and PUAN

Senior representatives from the U.S. Embassy-including Mr. Garhett Mecham, Program Officer for Criminal Justice at the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Section, and Ms. Marta Aparicio, Public Diplomacy Officer and manager of PUAN-joined the launch ceremony.

Mr. Mecham praised the initiative as a milestone in the U.S. Mission’s support for strengthening rule of law, transparency, and digital transformation in Pakistan. He emphasized that tools like ODR are crucial for improving institutional performance and increasing public trust in the justice system.

Ms. Aparicio congratulated Dr. Nudrat and ICADRP, noting that projects like these reflect PUAN’s commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship, and community empowerment. She highlighted how digital ADR solutions help remove barriers for businesses-ultimately strengthening economic ties between Pakistan and the United States.

Technology Demonstration: How the ODR System Works

Digital transformation expert Ms. Sultana Mahmood conducted a live demonstration showcasing the platform’s core features:

  • Remote filing and management of disputes
  • Secure virtual mediation rooms
  • Online arbitration proceedings
  • AI-supported dispute assessment
  • A simplified, user-friendly interface

These features ensure wider accessibility for citizens, small businesses, and overseas Pakistanis, while promoting transparency and efficiency in dispute resolution.

Building a Sustainable ADR Ecosystem

Dr. Nudrat and ICADRP have laid out a comprehensive sustainability plan that includes:

  • A long-term fee-based model to sustain operations
  • Free ADR services for courts hearing pro bono cases involving women, children, and vulnerable populations
  • Ongoing capacity-building for mediators, arbitrators, judges, and lawyers
  • Policy research, educational materials, and social media outreach
  • Partnerships with national and international ADR organizations

This framework is designed to institutionalize ADR as a permanent feature of Pakistan’s justice system, reduce litigation delays, and support a healthy investment climate.

A Milestone in U.S.–Pakistan Collaboration

The launch of Pakistan’s first ODR platform is a significant achievement not only for the justice sector but also for Pakistan’s broader economic and governance landscape. Led by Dr. Nudrat Ejaz Piracha, a distinguished Fulbright scholar empowered through U.S.-Pakistan educational cooperation, and supported by PUAN and the U.S. Mission, the initiative demonstrates how partnerships rooted in knowledge exchange and innovation can drive national progress.

As Pakistan moves toward a more digital, transparent, and inclusive system of justice, this platform stands as a landmark achievement—ushering in a modern era of dispute resolution that benefits citizens, businesses, and investors alike.
