Research, Resilience and Renewal: The Story of Hira Sarwar

Hira Sarwar’s journey into the world of minerals and energy began with a simple question: How can Pakistan grow sustainably while ensuring that no community is left behind? Her search for that answer led her into research on renewable energy, critical minerals and green industrialization, where she explores how Pakistan can contribute to global climate goals while building a more prosperous future at home. She is currently writing a detailed research book on collaboration between Pakistan and the United States in energy and critical minerals, hoping to open new avenues for dialogue, investment and policy reform.

Yet Hira’s story is not only about research or policy. It is about resilience, purpose and an unwavering belief in service.

As Editor in Chief of World Affairs Insider World Affairs Insider, she has created a platform that gives young writers, students and women from remote regions the chance to publish their work without financial barriers. Many of these young researchers found their first step into the policy world because Hira believed in giving them a voice.

Her path to becoming a cultural diplomat began years earlier, when she authored Pakistan’s first academic thesis on cultural diplomacy. That work shaped her lifelong mission to use culture as a bridge between nations. Today, her research with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research United Nations Institute for Training and Research and her role with the Pakistan Japan Cultural Association Pakistan Japan Cultural Association allow her to continue building those bridges at both the grassroots and global levels.

Hira’s work has been recognized internationally. She was honored as the NextGen Security Expert of South Asia by the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad, represented Pakistan at the International CEOSSC Congress in Kazakhstan, received the Khadijah Award and the title of Most Empowered Woman by Karachi Women Entrepreneurs, and was named Journalist of the Year 2025 by the Youth Parliament Punjab Youth Parliament Punjab. She is also a nominee for the Human Rights Award 2025 by the Human Rights Council of Pakistan Human Rights Council of Pakistan.

Hira’s dedication to climate and community development lives through the Green Diplomacy Network and Climate Diplomacy Lab. There, she has mentored young researchers and co developed moisture-control sheets that help preserve fruits and vegetables, an innovation especially meaningful in a country where a large portion of produce is lost after harvest. She has also launched small enterprises to help empower women economically through value added food products.

But it is Hira’s personal journey that truly defines her strength. In 2024, during her United States Embassy AWE Fellowship, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Even as she navigated chemotherapy, she continued her fellowship, finished her book “Two Nations and One Voice,” and guided young researchers who looked up to her. The day after one of her chemotherapy sessions, she presented a research paper, an image that has since inspired countless people across Pakistan’s academic and policy circles.

Today, Hira advocates for early cancer detection and for placing human well being at the heart of sustainable development. Her life is a reminder that progress is not only measured by research or policy, but by courage, compassion and the determination to keep moving forward, no matter how difficult the path becomes.
