From Classroom to Global Impact: How Shawana Fazal Empowered Youth through Academic Literacy

Shawana Fazal, a bright star in the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN), recently completed a Mission Initiated Alumni Small Grant (ASG) project that’s making waves. Titled “Developing Academic Literacy: Empowering Youth for Educational Opportunities and Employment,” Shawana’s project has touched the lives of 80 direct beneficiaries and a staggering 5,000 indirectly, leaving a lasting mark on the academic landscape of Hazara University, Mansehra.

Shawana’s passion for education is evident in her rich experience with global research and projects. Having collaborated with giants like USAID Pakistan and the British Academy, she brings a unique perspective to fostering cross-cultural collaborations and shaping educational paradigms.

Launched in August 2023, the ASG project tackled head-on the issue of academic literacy gaps among university students. Through impactful workshops on reading skills, statement of purpose writing, digital tool mastery, and resume crafting, Shawana and her team equipped 80 students with essential skills.

The project’s impact went beyond these workshops. With the establishment of a writing center staffed by PUAN alumni, ongoing support and skill development became a reality for countless students. This center serves as a beacon of academic guidance, extending the project’s reach far beyond the initial participants.

The selection of these activities wasn’t random. Recognizing the vital role of strong academic literacy in students’ future success, Shawana meticulously designed the workshops to address their most pressing needs. The carefully curated curriculum prepared them for both higher studies and the competitive job market, giving them the tools they need to thrive in our globalized world.

The project’s most significant outcome? A noticeable enhancement in students’ academic capabilities. They learned to articulate their thoughts with clarity, analyze information critically, and present themselves confidently – skills that will open doors to countless opportunities. The writing center further cements this success by providing lasting support and fostering a culture of continuous learning.

Shawana’s project resonated deeply with students, as these two testimonials reveal:

“The workshops completely changed how I approach academics,” says Student A. “The focus on reading and resume writing gave me the tools I need to succeed in higher studies and beyond. This project has opened doors for my future that I never thought possible.”

Another student also echoes the same sentiment: “Being part of the writing center has been transformative. The peer learning environment, guided by PUAN alumni, has not only improved my writing but also created a supportive community. I now feel confident and prepared for whatever comes next, thanks to this incredible project.”

Shawana Fazal’s story is one of passion, dedication, and impactful change. Through her ASG project, she has empowered countless young minds, equipping them with the tools they need to navigate the academic and professional world with confidence. The Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network is proud to have such a shining star among its ranks, and we look forward to seeing the ripple effects of this project for years to come.
