Farzana Ali Shah, an alumna of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), has spent over 14 years working in the development sector. She’s partnered with national and international organizations on projects ranging from water and sanitation to education, health, and conflict resolution.
Farzana has taken on many roles, including trainer, project manager, and consultant, focusing on helping marginalized groups—youth, women, children, and religious leaders.
One of her key initiatives is the IVLP Impact Award Project: Local Level Disengagement and Rehabilitation, supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This project trained 350 young people, teachers, and community members in conflict resolution, encouraging social cohesion and peaceful conflict management. Participants were empowered to become agents of change in their communities. Many teachers went on to apply these lessons in their classrooms, promoting peace and respect for diversity among students.
Farzana’s work on projects like A Global Moment in Time: Peace and Justice reflects her commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding within communities. By bringing together political leaders, elders, and youth, she has helped create stronger, more resilient communities that value peace and coexistence.
Her efforts show how local initiatives can tackle complex challenges and drive lasting, positive change, long after the projects have ended. Farzana’s journey highlights the power of community and shared vision in making a real difference.
