PUAN Islamabad Chapter Hosts Annual Alumni Reunion 2025

The Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN) Islamabad Chapter brought together more than 150 alumni recently for its Annual Alumni Reunion. The gathering highlighted connection, purpose, and the continued impact of U.S. exchange programs on Pakistani professionals and communities. Held in Islamabad, the event brought together alumni from Fulbright, Humphrey, IVLP, SUSI, UGRAD, English Works, AWE, and several other programs, representing a wide range of fields including law, education, technology, private sector, entrepreneurship, public service and so on. Throughout the reunion, the sense of belonging among participants stood out. Although the alumni came from different backgrounds, everyone shared a common experience that shaped their worldview and professional journey.

Introducing the Moderator: The Impactful Journey of Shafaq Shahid, Global UGRAD Alumna

This year’s reunion was moderated by Shafaq Shahid, a Global UGRAD alumna from Spring 2024.

Shafaq has been active in several international academic and professional initiatives, including moot court competitions, mediation trainings, and essay-writing programs. She most recently served as the National Coordinator for the WIF Mediation Memo Writing Competition 2025 and the Foreign Direct Investment Arbitration Moot Court 2025.

Shafaq’s moderation reflected the energy and perspective of a new generation of alumni who are applying their exchange experience to academic leadership, cross-cultural collaboration, and professional growth.

Mr. Andy Halus, Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy, U.S. Embassy Islamabad

In his opening remarks, Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy Mr. Andy Halus spoke about the continued value of educational and cultural exchanges in strengthening Pakistan-U.S. relations.

Drawing on his wide-ranging public diplomacy experience, he emphasized how networks like PUAN build collaboration, encourage leadership and support resilient communities. His message focused on partnership, opportunity and the responsibility alumni carry as ambassadors of their programs.

Mr. Mazhar Qayyum Awan, Director Alumni Affairs, USEFP

Mr. Mazhar Qayyum Awan followed with remarks on USEFP’s commitment to supporting alumni long after their programs.

Mr. Mazhar highlighted the strength of the PUAN community and noted that alumni stories continue to inspire program outreach and future collaborations. His message reinforced the idea that every alumnus contributes meaningfully to Pakistan’s social and professional landscape.

Alumni Stories: Reflections on Impact, Growth and Responsibility

The alumni talk segment was a key highlight, offering space for participants to share how their exchange experiences influenced their personal and professional growth.

Mr. Muhammad Majid Bashir, IVLP Alumnus and Former Judge

Mr. Majid Bashir spoke about his IVLP experience and its influence on his work in legal and institutional reforms. As a Senior Partner at ABS & Co. and founding President of PUAN, he reflected on his role in establishing Pakistan’s Intellectual Property Organization and noted how alumni can advance mentorship and leadership across sectors.

Dr. Zunaira Saqib, Entrepreneur and Academic

Dr. Zunaira Saqib shared her journey as founder of Pakistan’s first AI-based aptitude testing and career counseling platform, Merafuture.pk. Through a short project video and her talk, she described the need for accessible career guidance and how technology can support young people in making informed choices. Her story highlighted how an exchange-inspired mindset empowers individuals to create solutions that serve local communities.

Ms. Amna Saleem, Fulbright/USAID Alumna and Technology Professional

Ms. Amna Saleem reflected on her academic journey at Northeastern University and her diverse professional roles in telecom, technical writing and business development. She spoke about adaptability, continuous learning and the importance of alumni supporting one another as they pursue evolving career paths.

Closing Reflections and a Call for Continued Engagement

The event concluded with remarks from Ms. Heidi Smith, Director of Public Engagement at the U.S. Embassy. She emphasized the ongoing importance of public engagement and the role exchange alumni play in building bridges between communities. Her message encouraged alumni to stay active in their fields and remain connected to PUAN’s mission.

A Moment for Togetherness

Before closing, the MC invited all alumni, U.S. Embassy officials and USEFP representatives for a group photo. The networking tea that followed provided a space for alumni to reconnect, explore new ideas and discuss collaborative possibilities. For many participants, the reunion served as more than a formal gathering. It was a reminder of PUAN’s purpose: bringing people together, amplifying positive change and building a community committed to learning and service. Whether through entrepreneurship, education, technology or public diplomacy, the stories shared at the event underscored how exchange alumni continue to lead and inspire.
