Freedom 250: Afshan Huma’s Journey of Advancing Peace Education through Global Learning

Dr. Afshan Huma, a Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholar and PhD graduate in Curriculum Instruction and Teacher Education from Michigan State University, exemplifies how U.S. exchange experiences can drive educational transformation, research innovation, and peacebuilding in Pakistan.

Currently serving as Assistant Professor at Allama Iqbal Open University, Dr. Huma’s journey reflects a deep commitment to linking global learning with local impact. Her first exposure to the United States in 2007 through the Pakistan Educational Leadership Institute reshaped her understanding of teaching, leadership, and academic inquiry. This early experience inspired her to pursue a research-driven academic path, recognizing that sustainable educational reform must be grounded in critical inquiry and evidence-based practice.

Her academic journey continued with a PhD at Michigan State University under the USAID Pre-STEP scholarship, where she deepened her engagement with transformative and emancipatory approaches to education. Through her research and supervision of graduate students, she explored complex social issues, including exclusion, violence, and extremism, within educational spaces, contributing to a more inclusive and critical discourse on education in Pakistan.

Her most recent exchange as a Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholar at San José State University in 2024 further strengthened her commitment to social change. Returning to Pakistan in 2025, she expanded her role beyond academia to become a leading advocate for Peace Education. She developed a comprehensive framework titled “Trauma-Informed Place-Based Peace Pedagogy,” authored a book, and designed professional development modules to promote inclusive, empathetic, and context-sensitive teaching practices.

Throughout 2025, Dr. Huma actively piloted these modules across Pakistan, training over 100 school teachers and conducting sessions at universities nationwide. Her work extended beyond classrooms into community engagement, where she organized a series of impactful initiatives, including a webinar on the International Day of Living Together in Peace, as well as activities such as walks, hikes, meditation sessions, arts-based engagements, and panel discussions on Peace Day and Human Rights Day. These initiatives fostered dialogue, reflection, and collective action around peace, coexistence, and social responsibility.

Her efforts have been further strengthened through collaboration with international academics and organizations, including Jason Laker and Leo Sandy, reflecting the enduring value of cross-border partnerships facilitated by U.S. exchange programs.

As the United States marks 250 years of global engagement, Dr. Afshan Huma’s journey highlights the transformative power of exchange programs in shaping educators who drive meaningful change in society. She encourages educators, researchers, and students in Pakistan to pursue U.S. exchange opportunities and engage in collaborative learning with international institutions. Such experiences, she emphasizes, not only strengthen professional expertise but also empower individuals to contribute to peacebuilding, inclusive education, and sustainable development in their communities.
