Freedom 250: Muhadsa Naqvi’s Journey of Youth Leadership and Community Empowerment

Syeda Muhadsa Naqvi, an alumna of the U.S. Global Undergraduate Exchange Program (UGRAD) 2022 and the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), 2022, exemplifies how U.S. exchange experiences can inspire purpose-driven leadership, youth empowerment, and sustainable community impact.

Growing up in the mountains of Muzaffarabad, Muhadsa always carried a deep desire to serve her community. Even before she fully understood the meaning of leadership, she believed education and service could create meaningful change. That vision took a transformative turn when she was selected for a semester exchange program in the United States, a milestone that broadened her perspective and reshaped her understanding of leadership and civic engagement.

During her time in the United States, Muhadsa witnessed a culture where young people were encouraged to lead, innovate, and actively contribute to their communities. She experienced leadership not as a position, but as a mindset grounded in collaboration, responsibility, and action. Exposure to diverse communities, student-led initiatives, and problem-solving approaches strengthened her confidence, independence, and sense of purpose.

Returning to Kashmir, Muhadsa realized her mission had evolved. Her organization, previously known as the Kashmir Empowerment Association, no longer reflected the clarity of her vision. She renamed it Leading Visionaries with a bold goal: to nurture leadership within every household and empower young people to understand and contribute toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Her vision focused on creating ripple effects of positive change through informed, community-driven leadership.

This vision soon translated into action. With support through a U.S. Embassy grant, she launched Project LEAD: Next Generation of Leaders, a community development initiative that trained more than 500 students in leadership and personal development. Through workshops, mentorship, and youth engagement activities, she helped participants discover their voices, build confidence, and develop the skills needed to create impact within their communities.

Muhadsa also became a strong advocate for educational access and global opportunities. Drawing from her own exchange experience, she has guided thousands of students on study-abroad pathways, helping young people navigate applications, scholarships, and international academic opportunities. Through counseling sessions and outreach activities, she encourages students from underserved communities to dream bigger and confidently pursue global learning experiences.

Muhadsa’s dedication to youth empowerment and community service has earned national recognition. She received a Gold Medal from the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir for her volunteer work in youth empowerment and, in 2025, was honored with the Pride of Pakistan Award by the Government of Pakistan. For Muhadsa, however, the true reward remains the opportunity to create lasting change in the lives of young people.

As the United States marks 250 years of global engagement, Muhadsa Naqvi’s story highlights the enduring value of people-to-people exchanges in shaping future leaders. She encourages young Pakistanis, especially aspiring changemakers from underserved communities, to apply for U.S. exchange programs and use those experiences to strengthen their communities through leadership, education, and innovation. Her journey reflects how exchange programs can transform individual potential into collective impact.
