ASG on Green Feathers and Fertile Earth Kicks Starts at Murree

Prof. Dr. Habib’s innovative project, funded by the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN) Alumni Small Grant (ASG), aims to tackle the environmental challenges in Murree through a holistic approach. This 16-week project titled “Green Feathers and Fertile Earth” will promote sustainable solutions. This will be achieved by converting food waste into valuable resources for poultry farming and agri-composting. The ASG kick-started with an opening ceremony titled,” Green Feathers and Fertile Earth: A Holistic Approach to Environmental Sustainability via Food Waste Conversion for Poultry Farming and Agri-Composting” held at Kohsar University Murree. The students, teachers and staff from Convenet of Jesus and Merry, Saint Denys High school Murree and Lawrence college Ghora Gali and representatives of the hotel industry, tour guides participated in the opening workshop.

Addressing a Growing Problem:

Murree, a popular tourist destination in Pakistan, faces a significant challenge with solid waste management, particularly during peak seasons. This project will target food waste generated by hotels, aiming to not only reduce waste but also create valuable products.

The Power of Black Soldier Flies (BSF):

The project leverages the remarkable capabilities of BSF larvae. These larvae efficiently consume food waste, transforming it into a protein-rich source of poultry feed. Following this bioconversion process, the remaining residue will be used to create organic fertilizer.

Building Expertise and Empowering Communities:

The project aims to offer a two-pronged approach:

  • Knowledge Dissemination: Training sessions and toolkits will equip participants with advanced knowledge in bioconversion techniques, sustainable agriculture practices, and environmental impact assessment.
  • Community Engagement: The project fosters outreach through workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns, encouraging wider adoption of these sustainable practices within Murree.

Long-Term Impact:

Green Feathers and Fertile Earth promises not only immediate waste reduction but also empowers communities for the future. Participants will gain expertise in sustainable practices, leading to potential income generation through bioconversion processes.

This project aligns perfectly with the U.S.-Pakistan Green Alliance framework, fostering cross-cultural collaboration and building partnerships for environmental sustainability. By promoting green solutions and empowering communities, Prof. Dr. Habib’s project will pave the way for a brighter future for Murree and its residents.
