Freedom 250: Sahil Kashwani’s Journey of Education, Peacebuilding, and Youth Empowerment

Sahil Kashwani, an alumnus of the English Works Program (2021–2022), demonstrates how U.S. exchange experiences can empower young leaders to transform classrooms, strengthen communities, and inspire social change.

Hailing from the underprivileged desert region of Sindh, Sahil’s journey is rooted in resilience and a deep belief in the transformative power of education. Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Education at Sukkur IBA University, he has emerged as an educator and youth leader committed to creating inclusive learning environments and empowering marginalized communities. His previous leadership roles included serving as Coordinator at the Education Society, SISC, and as an Executive Board Member of the Sukkur Chapter of the Pakistan–U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN).

For Sahil, the turning point came through the English Works Program. Unlike traditional learning spaces he had experienced growing up, the program introduced him to a classroom culture where questions were encouraged, discussions mattered, and students were empowered to express themselves freely. One simple moment, being encouraged to continue speaking during a classroom discussion despite hesitation, reshaped his confidence and understanding of education. It taught him that voice is not a privilege reserved for a few, but a responsibility that can empower communities.

Inspired by these experiences, Sahil began exploring broader educational opportunities through online courses and teacher training programs focused on inquiry-based learning and professional development. Exposure to U.S.-informed teaching methodologies changed the way he viewed education, not as memorization or authority, but as dialogue, critical thinking, and participation.

Determined to bring these ideas back to his community, Sahil chose to pursue a degree in education with the goal of helping create classrooms grounded in dignity, structure, and engagement. Over time, his work expanded into mentoring and teacher training, where he supported more than 50 student-teachers in lesson planning, classroom participation, and learner-centered instruction. By encouraging educators to move beyond lectures and embrace discussion-based learning, he contributed to more inclusive and interactive educational environments.

His commitment to peacebuilding and social cohesion also became a defining part of his journey. Sahil facilitated interfaith and peacebuilding workshops that encouraged young participants to listen across differences and engage in meaningful dialogue. Through the Salamti Fellowship, he designed youth-led initiatives connecting local schools through sustained interfaith engagement and peer facilitation, creating platforms that continued beyond the fellowship itself.

In recognition of his leadership and impact, Sahil was invited by the Youth Ministry Sindh to speak at the Young Leaders Conference organized by the School of Leadership, where he shared his story of perseverance, exchange-informed leadership, and community service. Over the years, he has earned more than 40 certificates through educational and leadership programs, reflecting his commitment to continuous learning and growth.

As the United States marks 250 years of global engagement, Sahil Kashwani’s story highlights the lasting impact of exchange programs in empowering young people to become educators, peacebuilders, and community leaders. He encourages students and emerging leaders across Pakistan to apply for U.S. exchange opportunities and use those experiences to strengthen classrooms, foster dialogue, and create positive change within their communities.
